箴 4:23
I. 這條生命法則該如何遵守?心該如何保守?
如果我們要保守我們的心,就必須有受過訓練的想像力。兩者之間的關係極為密切。那麼,想像力的工作是什麼?想像力是這樣運作的:它獲取抽象的事物,並以具體的形式呈現給心。它獲取觀念並將其轉化為圖畫;通過將這些像圖畫或影像一樣的觀念呈現給心,它在心中激發出某些情感。如果這些圖畫訴諸恐懼,它們就會在心中產生厭惡的精神。如果這些圖畫訴諸心所喜悅的事物,它就會以吸引力的形式呈現。
受過訓練的想像力是心靈得到正確調節、生命得到正確塑造的條件。
II. 我自己相信,除非你承認有一種組織化的邪惡力量從外部作用於我們,否則就不可能解釋我們屬靈生命的現象。無論在理解這一真理時存在什麼神學困難,如果我不知道有一種在我之外的力量有能力激發我內心的思想,我就無法解釋我自己屬靈經歷的事實;因為這些進入我想像力並向我心靈提議的事物,往往不是我自己尋求的,它們完全是在我沒有意志的情況下臨到我的;就好像我走在路上,一顆子彈射向我,我立刻感覺到它在內部的影響;想像力立刻被激發,以一種持續的、迷人的方式活動起來,這對我最高尚的自我來說是一種絕對的痛苦,但對我較低層次的本性來說,卻是一種絕對的樂趣。
III. 我必須以某種方式掌握我的想像力;正如我治服我的身體一樣,我也必須使我的想像力服從。你打算怎麼做?
1. 為此禱告。
2. 注意你的閱讀。
3. 盡你所能做一切能為想像力提供健康食糧的事。
要真正獲得想像力的平靜,只有一條路;那就是讓想像力的眼睛時刻凝視著美的異象。
